EDF Energy announces nuclear land sale process for Bradwell

27th November 2009

EDF Energy today - 27 November - announced the commencement of a sale process relating to the divestment of land potentially suitable for new nuclear build at its site at Bradwell.

The sale process will allow EDF Energy to deliver on an undertaking it made to UK government as part of the acquisition of British Energy.

In accordance with this, any sale agreed will be conditional on the final results of the Government's Nuclear NPS and on EDF Energy obtaining planning permission for two European Pressurised water Reactors (EPR) at its site at Sizewell.

As part of the first stage of the sale process, EDF Energy is inviting credible nuclear operators to come forward with expressions of interest in the site.

Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson, Managing Director Nuclear New Build, said:

"We believe the site at Bradwell which was named in the Government’s recently published draft Nuclear National Policy Statement, has good potential for new build and will be attractive to potential developers of nuclear power plants.

"EDF Energy has long indicated that we would like to build our four EPRs at Sizewell and Hinkley Point, with the first operational by the end of 2017. This sale process goes hand in hand with our plans and the industry’s wider objectives in seeking to help address the country’s long-term energy issues."

Notes for Editors

  1. • EDF Energy acquired part of the land at Bradwell as a result of its acquisition of British Energy in January and the remainder through the NDA's auction of land at Bradwell earlier this year.
  2. • The land will only be sold to a credible nuclear operator, i.e. an organisation that currently operates a nuclear power plant anywhere in the world and operates an electricity generating station subject to UK regulations, or is committed to doing so by 2025.
  3. • The sale does not include the adjoining NDA site containing the original power station at Bradwell which ceased generating in 2002 and is currently being decommissioned by Magnox.
  4. • If the conditions of the sale are not met, EDF Energy will be entitled to retain and develop the Bradwell site itself.
