Energy

The energy industry underpins modern life in the UK. It enables us to heat and light our homes, and provides us with the products we consume. In 2003, 46.5% of our energy consumption came from petroleum, 35% was natural gas and 17% was electricity.

Electricity generation is a major industry, involving a number of technologies and a vast transmission and distribution grid. In 2003 the electricity industry supplied 378 Terawatt hours of power (1 Terawatt equals 1x1012 Watts). Put another way, this is equivalent to lighting 400 million light bulbs for an entire year.
