British Energy acquired the coal-fired station early in 2000, ahead of the introduction of the new electricity arrangements, in order to provide the company with more flexibility to complement our nuclear generation.
The station is operated as a versatile mid-merit plant and its output is influenced by factors such as market prices, our contracted trading position and other operational requirements.
Coal used at the station is mined from both within the UK and from abroad, and the plant can also burn biomass in conjunction with coal. Eggborough comprises four 500 MW coal-fired units. Each unit consists of a single boiler and a single shaft steam turbine.
Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) equipment at two of the station’s four units has already enabled us to comply with the demands of the Large Combustion Plant Directive that comes into effect from January 2008. This FGD technology reduces emissions of sulphur dioxide by around 90%.
